How to subscribe to/unsubscribe from club emails
Visit http://coursewebs.law.columbia.edu/sublist to pick which student groups you want to receive emails from.
Visit http://coursewebs.law.columbia.edu/soniblog to view a list of all the emails sent to all the student group listserves.
DETAILS:
Please be aware that if you check-off a bunch of groups and then hit the "subscribe" or "unsubscribe" buttons, that does NOT function to (respectively) unsubscribe or subscribe you to the groups that you did NOT check-off. If that is what you want, you would first have to check-off and (un)subscribe to EVERY group, before selecting the groups you wish to subscribe or unsubscribe to.
How to auto-forward your CLS account to a Gmail
Follow these instructions. (not these.)
Note: It is not advisable to "Keep a copy of messages in this account," because then your CLS inbox will eventually reach its quota, and then you'll have to delete emails anyhow.
How to send Columbia emails from within a Gmail account
● go to "Accounts and Import"
● go to "Send email from another address"
● Follow Gmail's instructions. Repeat the instructions for This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and also for This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
Using Gmail filters to organize CLS listserve emails
1. Go into Gmail.
2. click on Create a filter
3. Paste the following text into the field "Has the words" (but customize the colored bits to yourself):
4. Click on Next step
5. Put checkmarks in Skip Inbox, and Apply label. Create a distinctive label such as "CLS listserve"
6. Click on Create filter
This will have the following effect. You created a label, "CLS listserve," which functions as a folder. And you set up a "rule": Emails go to this folder if the "to" line contains the phrase "LAW" (meaning it either was sent to a student group listserve OR was sent by an administrator to the entire student body). HOWEVER, you exempted any "important" emails from this rule: If an email contains any of the words that are bounded by a set of {{brackets}} preceded by a "-" sign, they are exempt from the rule and go straight to your inbox.
Where is the student senate mailbox?
This question is not actually asked frequently, but we worked so hard on preparing an answer:

How do I browse for empty rooms?
How do I submit / obtain class outlines?
To obtain outlines: Using your Lawnet ID and password, login to the G-Drive at https://remote.law.columbia.edu and navigate the folders. Or you can go directly to past exams (posted by professors) or directly to outlines (posted by the Student Senate). If it isn't working, contact CLS IT at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it for support.
To submit an outline, just email it to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with the word "outline" in the subject line. Use the following conventions:
• FILE FORMAT: Use MSWord.doc. You may also use google doc. Do not use the pdf or docx formats.
• CONTENTS: Remove your name from the document. If you wish, add an introductory paragraph describing the contents of the outline.
• FILE NAME: Professor name, class name, year and semester of the course, and (ideally) the authors and edition of the casebook. Example: "Rapaczynski - Torts - 09F - FranklinRabinGreen 9th".
• OBTAINING YOUR KIT KAT BAR: Please indicate your interest in the subject or body of your email, and we will give you a Kit Kat bar. If you have a dietary restriction, we will work something out.
Where can I obtain a list of casebooks for my classes?
Casebooks are listed on Columbia University Courseworks, here. Also, confirm that you're purchasing the right book using the University Bookstore textbook search tool and the Book Culture search tool; these tools should also permit you to figure out what edition the professor wants. The new CLS course catalog also provides some course syllabi.
Instructors may change their requirements at any time, and may forget to update these listings. The most reliable source for casebook purchases is a communication from your instructors or their faculty assistant. Bookstores generally will not take back books that have been highlighted in, regardless of whether the book was purchased mistakenly.
●Spring 2009: University Bookstore; Book Culture P.1, P.2, P.3
●Fall 2009: All books

How to record student group meetings
You may already know that the school has installed new technology to enable professors to schedule automatic recording of their classes. What you may not know is that this technology may also be used by recognized student groups. The Student Senate sought a clarification of this policy, and Student Services responded immediately with this post to their blog. All classrooms are equipped for audio, and some can also record video; the info is available here.
IT requests that you make requests with at least 24 hours notice, and ideally 48. This is to allow IT to test the room and schedule.
